Remember that for twitter the advertisers are the clients and the users are
the product. If the power users who drive engagement find the service to be
unbearable whether due to vicious trolling or impersonators, they will
leave, their followers will leave, and advertisers will abandon the
platform.

If hate speech overwhelms the platform, advertisers will abandon it. To
make Twitter what it was took a lot of money and effort. Trying to make
radical changes in a short period will probably wreck it and Elon’s
business record shows he’s not completely in the dark about how to keep it
running, which means he’ll go back on a lot of these pronouncements.

I say “who cares?” because twitter has no institutional depth. There’s a
small number of people who based their businesses on Twitter and they’ll
suffer if it gets wrecked. But the vast majority of users can abandon the
platform and wait for engineers to develop a better one. The strength of a
social media platform is in its networks, not its software.
