That’s standard for those sorts of shows. Usually, those cutaways are used
in post-production when a camera is jostled or when performers move
unexpectedly out of frame. The handheld camera pointed at the audience
almost always has an isolated recording so they can use it as
needed/wanted. It does get overused on shows, because it is easier to cut
those in instead of multiple rehearsals to avoid needing them.
