I understand the desire to move the lifetime achievement awards back to the broadcast. However, it's my understanding that the separate Governors Awards ceremony is popular with Academy members, because it allows lifetime achievement winners to give long speeches befitting their status without having to deal with a TV-imposed 45-second time limit. At the most recent ceremony, two of the winners, directors Peter Weir and Euzhan Palcy, spoke for 15 minutes apiece; Michael J. Fox spoke for 13 minutes; and Diane Warren spoke for 6 minutes. No way they're going to get rid of that. Also, it's held at a dinner which allows stars to shmooze with their fellow stars. They just love that stuff.
