The controversial video for "Try That in a Small Town" did what it was meant to do, as the single debuted in the BIllboard Hot 100 all the way at number 2, only Aldean's second appearance in the top 10 of the big chart ever (and his first top 10 since 2011's "Dirt Road Anthem") and number one on the country chart (his first number one in seven years). Before the video, the best the single could do was 119 on the "Bubbling Under the Hot 100" chart.
It seems mostly a victory in streaming and iTunes downloads, as radio seems to still be leary about playing it--it is nowhere on any of Billboard's airplay charts (that aren't behind paywalls) and on Mediabase's chart of monitored airplays, the chart that Seacrest uses on "American Top 40." And onrad.io, the aggregator of streaming radio around the world, lists "Small Town" as currently number 164 in airplay, being played around 300 times a day and was played on only 152 of their thousands of stations yesterday. As comparison, the current onrad.io number one, Luke Combs' remake of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car," was played on 567 streams yesterday and is being played over 2,500 times a day worldwide.
