Wenner and RS have earned their high place in pop culture history. But, also he leans into and embodies almost every horrible stereotype of white male Boomers. I was born at the very tail end of that generation, and the idea that Mick Jagger is an articulate philosopher of what the generation was about, but Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin “didn’t measure up to that same historical standard” is 100% horseshit.
I mean, dude literally says (when asked if his close friendship with Jagger biased his evaluation of his work) “I confess: I probably went too far. So what? I’m entitled.” What the actual fuck? I Can forgive someone for not being able to control their own bias - that is human. I can not forgive someone who doesn’t even try, because, well, they can’t be bothered, and they fundamentally believe their biases are actually closer to the truth than anyone else’s. He confesses to allowing interview subject to edit and revise his interviews prior to publication. He denies that his ass kissing led to any distortion or subversion of journalistic standards. My anger at this crap runs deep; in adolescence and young adulthood I thought Rolling Stone was the definitive, honest, real journalistic account of contemporary culture. It wasn’t until my late 20s early 30s that I began to question the honesty and integrity of those guys, and how they had led us astray. The bullshit culture continues after Wenner’s retirement reflected in weaknesses in some recent stories we have discussed.
