Annie Nightingale was the first woman DJ hired by BBC Radio 1 in 1970--her 
last program was on this past Dec. 19--working at night allowed her not to 
follow a playlist but follow her heart, supporting punk and new wave in the 
70s and techno music for many years thereafter--on television, she was also 
a host of the long-running BBC2 music show "The Old Grey Whistle Test"--she 
died Thursday at her London home after a short illness:
