Longtime members of this group know I used to refer to Shannen as “my future ex-wife”. I felt she was, if not a kindred spirit, at least someone who made as bad (or worse) decisions than I was making at the time (both personally and professionally).
I worked very briefly on Conan O’Brien’s Late Night when the show visited LA, and we were shooting a comedy bit in producer Aaron Spelling’s office. Off camera, Conan was asking Aaron why he had cast Shannen in “Charmed” when she had a proven reputation for volatility on and off the set. Spelling replied that in spite of (maybe because of) all the drama, people found Doherty very watchable… she guaranteed ratings. That conversation summed up Hollywood to me. People can’t resist watching a hot mess, so give the public what they want, even if it makes everyone involved miserable. Rest In Peace, Shannen. Kevin M.
