Charlie Kirk was a reprehensible human being, symbolic of much of what is
wrong in this country these days and responsible for no small part of it.
But obviously he didn’t deserve to get murdered for his beliefs or
political activism, and he’s not responsible for his own death. Did the
MSNBC contributor’s comment indicate that Kirk was responsible for his own
death or deserve to be murdered? I think it’s a grey area, though Dowd has
since clarified that he did not mean that. Would a commentator at Fox News
be fired for making similar comments about a liberal activist who was
murdered? Unlikely ever and impossible today.

Dowd’s fate is hardly the most important concern in the last weeks events,
But it’s unfortunate. He Should have been more careful - In general, I
think it’s good practice to wait until somebody has been buried before
making your strongest and most negative public comments about him; There’s
always time for that and unless he’s Henry Kissinger or some other total
monster, there’s usually some value in respecting the space, family and
friends need to mourn. But his firing does show how unequal the playing
field is right now and how difficult it is for corporate news to describe
and discuss honestly and accurately what is going on in this country.
