After over a decade of two separate categories for "scripted" ("SNL,"
Oliver) and talk (almost everything else), the variety series category is
being remerged for this year's Emmys, although it should be noted that the
nominees will be roughly half one category and half the other and that it
is now an "area" award, meaning that each show is a yes-or-no vote and that
the possibility exists of more than one winner:
