Subject: [Wildfeeds] Update on NASA Digital TV

Generally good news: NASA has announced that they will use
generic MPEG-2 DVB for a multi-channel service beginning in May.
They specify their current east-coast satellite, AMC-6, tr17,
parameters tbd. They do not specify if they will continue to
simulcast on the west coast satellite AMC-7.

With any luck they will be up in digital before the Space Shuttle
launch currently scheduled for mid-May > early June launch.
Aside from being the first Shuttle launch in over two years, I believe
Discovery is equipped with the new digital video system, which
basically downlinks miniDV camcorder tapes in full miniDV quality.
That combined with the digital C-band should produce the best
NASA video ever! (Remembering that throughout its history, NASA
has often been pretty sparkley).

Finally, just a note that the Russian Soyuz is launching this
Thursday (8:45pm ET) to the Space Station, with rendezvous for
Saturday night 10:10pm ET.
