http://www.smh.com.au/news/Breaking/Optus-satellite-outage-problem-fixed/2005/05/27/1117129872305.html Optus satellite outage problem fixed Sydney May 27, 2005 - 12:10PM Australia's second largest telco Optus today said its aging B1 satellite experienced an outage on Monday but that television broadcast services had been quickly restored. Optus said the outage was caused by a failure of the primary satellite control processor. "Similar failures have been experienced in the past by other satellites of the same design," the company said. "Service has been successfully restored using the back up satellite control processor." Optus plans to launch two new D1 and D2 satellites, with the first to be launched in 2006. The D satellites, which are being built by Orbital Sciences Corp of the US, will replace the B series satellites and will be used by broadcasters in Australia and New Zealand. The B1 and B3 satellites have been in operation since 1992 and 1994, respectively. Optus also operates a C1 satellite, which was launched in June 2003.
