Launches of Soyuz rockets banned

27 June 2005 18:30

The Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) has imposed a ban on
launches of Soyuz rockets saying the rehearsal will be possible after
results of the investigation into reasons of the recent accident with
the Molniya-M booster are known, employee of Roscosmos press department
Konstantin Kreydenko has said. According to him, this ban is necessary
when similar situations occur. Results of the investigation are to be
disclosed in a month.

Soyuz rockets transport manned and cargo aircraft to the International
Space Station (ISS). The next launch is targeted for August 2005. The
Russia booster is to deliver European-built Galaxy-14 into orbit. The
next launch of the Russian rocket to the ISS is scheduled for the mid of
September, when the Progress cargo aircraft is to deliver freight to the
station. After that the Soyuz piloted spaceship carrying new ISS crew
onboard is to be launched.

Molniya-M carrying a military communications satellite crashed in the
Tyumen region on June 21, 2005. The rocket launched normally, but later
its second and third sections failed to separate. The third section of
the rocket has not been put into operation. On June 21 another accident
occurred. The Volna intercontinental ballistic missile carrying Cosmos-1
aircraft with a solar sail for power was launched from the nuclear
submarine Borisoglebsk in the Barents Sea. Although the launch was a
success, Cosmos-1 has not been taken into orbit. The Volna rocket
booster carrying the spacecraft had failed 83 seconds after launch due
to an unknown problem.
