Intelsat Merging with PanAmSat
The consolidation bug continued to bite the commercial satellite
business, with PanAmSat and Intelsat the latest to announce intentions
to merge operations.
The PanAmSat/Intelsat deal, in which Intelsat will take over PanAmSat
assets, is huge: The $3.2 billion transaction would form a combined
company with a fleet of 53 satellites and serve customers in more than
220 countries and territories.
PanAmSat has a strong, video-centric customer base, with customers that
include providers of cable/satellite programming. Intelsat's strength
has been in providing telephony and advanced data services to developing
and underserved regions around the world.
Last year, DirecTV sold PanAmSat to affiliates of Kohlberg, Kravis
Roberts and Co., The Carlyle Group and Providence Equity Partners.
PanAmSat also went public earlier this year.
Once the deal is complete, David McGlade will continue to serve as CEO
and a director. Joseph Wright, CEO at PanAmSat, is expected to become
chairman of the board for the new company after completion of the
transaction.
The deal would need antitrust and Federal Communications Commission
approval. The companies said they anticipate the transaction could close
in about six to 12 months.
