SES Americom release
AMC-23 SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED FROM BAIKONUR
Proton/Breeze M Combination Works Flawlessly
December 29, 2005 - Princeton, NJ - The AMERICOM-23 (AMC-23) satellite
of SES AMERICOM, an SES GLOBAL company (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg
Stock Exchange: SESG), roared into space onboard an International Launch
Services Proton/Breeze M launch vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome
(Kazakhstan) at 8:28 a.m. Baikonur time (3:28 p.m. CET; 9:28 p.m.
Eastern U.S. on December 28th). After 9 hours and 19 minutes, the
spacecraft separated from the Breeze M and was placed into geostationary
transfer orbit (12:47 a.m. CET; 6:47 a.m. Eastern U.S. December 29th).
Edward Horowitz, President and CEO of SES AMERICOM, said, "The launch of
AMC-23 is a proud moment for the AMERICOM team. It is also a proud
moment for the Alcatel Alenia team who has built and delivered an
exceptional spacecraft, and for the ILS team of Lockheed Martin and
Krunichev, on the occasion of the 318th Proton launch." He continued,
"We are now looking forward to bringing this satellite into service so
that Connexion by Boeing and other customers can initiate their
trans-Pacific services in the first quarter."
Pascale Sourisse, President, Alcatel Alenia Space, said, "This is the
second Spacebus 4000 we have delivered to SES AMERICOM this year. AMC-23
was a terrific challenge for Alcatel as we customized the payload for a
new application but our teams in partnership with the AMERICOM program
team have delivered a great spacecraft. Our long lasting cooperation
with SES AMERICOM results once again in a promising success."
Mark Albrecht, ILS President, said, "This is the second Proton launch of
the year for this international launch team, and I’m proud that it
continues the 100 percent success record of the Proton Breeze M vehicle.
Our thanks to Alcatel Alenia Space and SES AMERICOM for once again
having the confidence that ILS would deliver the satellite safely into
orbit."
About AMC-23
The hybrid C/Ku-band satellite will undergo payload and performance
testing at 170 degrees West. AMC-23 is being prepared for operation in
early 2006 from 172 degrees East orbital position. An advanced,
high-powered hybrid C/Ku-band satellite, AMC-23 can deliver and receive
signals from California to Bangladesh, from as far north as Alaska in
the U.S. and as far south as Australia and New Zealand, and all points
in between. The spacecraft will serve local, transcontinental and
transoceanic customers across the Pacific region, including Western
North America, East Asia, the South Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii, and
provide links to the world's premier regional satellite systems.
The design of AMC-23 combines a conventional C-band landmass coverage
payload with an innovative Ku-band oceanic coverage payload. The
satellite's Ku-band payload, comprised of 20 high-powered transponders
with varied bandwidths from 27 to 36 MHz, has been tailored to the
long-haul airline routes over the Pacific Ocean to ensure consistent and
constant broadband connectivity requirements of our customer, Connexion
by Boeing. In comparison, the 18 transponder C-band payload will be used
by broadcasters, cable programmers, Internet service providers,
government agencies, educational institutions, carriers and private
networks for next generation distribution solutions within, and
connectivity to, North America and Pacific Rim.
