This Tuesday afternoon (1-17) ILS is launching the Pluto/New Horizons Observatory for MASA on a Atlas 5 rocket, designated AV-010 from Launch Complex 41, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.
Liftoff is scheduled for 1:24 p.m. EST. with a window extending to 3:23 p.m. EST. Spacecraft Separation happens about 48 minutes after liftoff. The New Horizons spacecraft will make the first ever reconnaissance of the last planet in our solar system, Pluto, and its multiple moons. The mission will also visit one or more objects in the Kuiper Belt region beyond Neptune. New Horizons spacecraft will first swing past Jupiter for a gravity boost, conduct related scientific studies through February or March 2007 and eventually reach Pluto by July 2015.
