This upcoming Thursday morning (9-27) United Launch Alliance is
scheduled to launch the Dawn asteroid

probe for NASA on a Delta II rocket (7925H configuration) from SLC-17B,
Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Launch is scheduled for 7:20 a.m. EDT. with a window extending to 7:49
a.m. EDT.

Dawn spacecraft separation occurs approximately 62 minutes after liftoff.

The Dawn asteroid probe will explore asteroid 4 Vesta and dwarf planet 1
Ceres
During the 8 year mission, Dawn will investigate Vesta's and Ceres'
internal structure, density and homogeneity

by measuring their mass, shape, volume and spin state with radiometric
tracking and imagery, and determine

elemental and mineral composition. From this information scientists can
determine the relationship between

meteorites and their parent bodies, and the thermal histories of the
bodies. From images of the surface,

knowledge of their bombardment, tectonic and possibly volcanic history
will be revealed.
