Like the answer to most questions - it depends.
Do you need to take your computer with you usually? This would be the
biggest benefit a laptop can give. The other benefit (if you are careful
while buying the laptop) is that the keypad is much softer. LCD screens are
easier on the eyes, but this you can get with a desktop too.
For programming, better have a decent configuration - getting this in a
laptop which also weighs less will mean you will have to pay more.
I use a laptop (HP DV6500 CTO) for all my work. Yes it gets heated up
(especially the HDD) like crazy - so I carry a laptop cooler also with me
(you'll get one for Rs. 400 in CTC, Park Lane). I use Ubuntu though, so I am
able to run a couple of servers, an XP VM and tons of other software without
any problem - the default Vista installation would never have stood this.
But, carrying all this and a 12 cell battery means that I have pretty good
biceps and shoulder muscles :).
