thnx..but i worked out the way myself.

my laptop is HP pavillion ZE4100. and the prob was with the driver.
the driver for my hard disk was either not supported, or there was some prob 
with the CD.

so i used the BROKEN MODULES = pata_ali option at boot.

so, it didnt load that driver...instead, it loaded the next driver in that list.

and it worked fine.
