Yes, SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) based computing is a very 
important solution blueprint.

The conceptual aspects of it are vast and multi-faceted.

When it comes to implementation:

 . For Windows till .Net, its Remoting (RPC inside COM in .Net)

 . For Java till Java6, its mostly Jini (leveraged on RMI) and some SOAP.

 . For Open Source infrastructures, its SOAP/REST

 . For JEE till EJB 3.0, its BPEL

 . For the OMG folks, its CORBA

This is a preliminary assessment. 
It would be nice to read the thoughts of practioners on this.
