I agree, it is annoying. Your best option is a dual-boot. Linux can be the primary OS, XP can be your time-pass OS.
If the pointless footprint of Windows bugs you, try: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:nlitexp or http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:installxp SDHC cards get cheaper everyday.
