Hi Vikram:

The safest bet would be to carry Knoppix or Gentoo LiveCD
with you. Which ever laptop you set your eyes on, you can
try and see if the hardware gets detected fine.

The areas of concern usually are:
  . wireless chipset (eg. Broadcom)
  . display (eg. Toshiba)
  . multimedia/fax SoC (eg. Connexant)

Your final decision would in most cases be a function of
Price, Looks and Features that work.
