i have one very simple question , .... did u set the primary authentication method to NIS rather than /etc/passwd or something .............. because it looks like the clients are first searching the local installation for authentication , and then going for NIS based authentication ( might explain the long time taken to login ) , ...............
i am not sure how this is done , ... but see if this is the problem ( try googling for a solution ) , ....
