I have been trying to ditch Windows completely (for openSUSE!) and
have so far run into many problems that I hope others can help me
solve. I have tried searching for solutions elsewhere but most of the
advice available seems to be either out of date or not work. So here
goes :

1. MP3 is being played perfectly by Banshee and Amarok. But what I
want is something like a universal codec that any media player can
use. For example if I want to preview the files being downloaded by
FrostWire, I need to open the incomplete files through Banshee/Amarok.
If I use the inbuilt preview feature, it fails after not finding a
codec. Does anyone know how to get a "global" codec for MP3 decoding?
This would also apply for video codecs (eg. DivX)

2. I have some old music video DVD's which are slightly
scratched/corrupted. When I try to read from them, it works fine. If I
hit a bad part of the disk though, VLC just hangs. I am unable to kill
it no matter what I try. My only solution is to reboot. Another
problem is, when this happens, I am unable to eject my CDROM drive
(/media/cdrom is busy). I tried various suggestions I found online,
but none of them worked for me. Is there any way to force an unmount
on a device?

3. SKIM which is a KDE frontend for SCIM, is killing me. If I am
typing a little fast, I tend to hit Ctrl and Space together which pops
up SKIM and changes my language to Chinese (!). I am unable to figure
out how to disable it (I tried disabling the inbuild option and it
didnt work). Can anyone guide me on how to edit ALL my startup
programs in KDE? For example if I want to remove a certain program
from starting up, how do I go about it?

4. I am used to talking online with some friends using GTalk's Audio
Chat. Is it possible in Linux? Can I use a VoIP solution to do this
maybe? I tried Google Talk with Wine and it doesn't seem to work. Does
anyone have any advice regarding this except switching back to Windows
(D:)?

5. I am having intense freeze up's with Firefox in openSUSE. It seems
to be a widerspread problem with a solution I couldn't find. Has
anyone experienced this? Can anyone guide me on how to fix it?

6. There are times when my computer just hangs completely. I can do
nothing but restart. The mouse moves around fine but I can't click
anything. This happens a lot with screensavers and full screen
video's. Is this a Graphics card issue maybe?

That's about it for now. I can't think of any other problems at this
moment. I'll update this if I do run into any more problems. I know
most of these are very newbie-ish, but this newbie would really
appreciate some help!
