How about studying the source code of Joomla to figure out how they implemented the 'Template Chooser' feature ? You may also want to take a look at Drupal. Should you face issues, with Drupal source code, please post a query here and we'll be able to help you with that. As you know that Drupal powers twincling.org and we are running it for the last 3+ years, have made enough upgrades 4.x -> 5.x -> 6.x, taken backups, written plugin modules and should be able to help in that regard. thanks Saifi.
