Thanks Manish, Navneet, Namita and Satish for the info. It is xorg-xinit in the /usr/ports/x11/ directory i'm currently using a FreeBSD 8.0 200902 snapshot and except the core kernel and toolchain, i've compiled up everything from the sources. Trying out dwm. thanks Saifi.
