I subscribe to MTNL TriBand DSL service in Mumbai and have gone through
2 DLink 502 modems between April 2005 and now. I suspect your modem is
on it's way out. The 1st DLink modem simply went dead, the 2nd DLink
modem would take anywhere from 6-10 minutes to get logged in (PPPoE
login upon reboot). I complained to MTNL and they sent a service
engineer and by sheer luck, in front of him it failed to register a new
IP in it's NVRAM! It was rented from MTNL so they replaced it w/o
charge.

Some one from broadbandforum.in suggested that I should use SMPS but
that should not be necessary.

Hmmm, I have the same modem but is branded by MTNL. The information in
the log and it's format look quite different.

In your place, I would make a trip to the local BSNL tel. exchange and
request a replacement modem if it is rented from them.
