Why don't you just maintain a github/sourceforge repo with the blockchain and update it at least weekly/monthly and have the client pull from that during initialization, pulling date a week or month behind is nothing, it's the "since the dawn of time" thing that is the issue.
To produce a tool that really dumb people are going to use means it has to be super easy and fast to install, the windows version fits this except for the blockchain update "since the dawn of time", this also might bypass the issue I had with the blockchain not downloading when I enable the "generate block" function during initialization, though that may just need to be disabled until the chain is fully updated.
