These are all valid comments. Clearly I needed to look more before I leaped. My criticism was honest and valid, but rooted in--as one poster pointed out--a false assumption. I forgot that an open-source project that appears to be sponsored by a major company isn't necessarily supported by them.
The point about offering to copy edit is also well-taken. I may just do that, or file issue reports as requested. The developers view their documentation as important, so it's correct to comment on it--in the right way.
