iPad Hardware Accelerate Modal Animations

I'm trying to get the iPad to apply hardware acceleration to the Bootstrap 
modal dialog animations when using the 'fade' class on them. The modal 
comes down from the top of the screen and fades in, but on the iPad the 
movement is choppy. I've tried adding translate3d to the CSS definitions to 
add HW acceleration but to no avail. Has anyone else tried to get this to 
work?
