I have tried with the new version 2.1 and it is working as Phil said just
remove the span from the parent

        <div style="background-color: grey;">
          <input type="text" class="span12">
          <a class="btn btn-primary">Create</a>
          <a class="btn btn-danger">Delete</a>
        </div>
