I use it for this purpose and it works great. The modal slides down from underneath the nav (z-index), can be positioned correctly, and I put a little arrow at the top, and it, obviously, can have links, buttons and whatever else you want.
Much nicer than the default "drop down" thing that comes standard. Which, quite frankly, doesn't have a lot of imagination. However, if I have more than 1, the issue is that you have to click to close one and click AGAIN to open another. Anyone have an idea on how to either: activate when hovering over a link, and/or making the modal act like dropdowns in that if one is showing and you click another link, the one showing disappears and the other slides in?
