You should be able to follow the docs/instructions on the site:
http://getbootstrap.com/components/#navbar

Make sure you insert the navbar in a row inside of the <div 
class="container"> that is presumably wrapped around your site. Don't use 
the .navbar-fixed-top or .navbar-fixed-bottom classes.

If that doesn't work, can you post your code?
