To put some more information behind this (I am part of the group
behind http://tweetback.holzhauer.it ):
What we do now: When a post is being opened for the first time, we
check at search.twitter.com for the tinyurl of the article and post
those as comments. The next time the post is called, we check if at
least 15 minutes have passes and if so, search.twitter gets called
again.

So what do you think about this? this might cost up to 96 calls to
search.twitter.com per blogpost for each blog and day, but of course
not all blogposts are normally being polled every day.

Thanks

Malte
