Topics don't just trend because its something 'important'. Now if it was of significantly larger volume than another topics (like the iphone's launch today), then that is rather interesting, but from what I can tell its mostly the most popular things floating to the top generally, plus some spam-filtering. I haven't figured out the exacting mechanisim for when something hits trending, but its not rocket science either.
