Please keep in mind that we keep deleted accounts around for a while, in case users want to restore their accounts. @yourfavoriteusername might appear to be available (that is, you get a 404 when you visit it), but that doesn't mean you'll be able to sign up with it until we've given the original account holder a fair amount of time to reconsider.
