Are you talking about client certificates?
Usually servers do not request a (client)certificate from the client.
When you connect to, i.e., https://www.microsoft.com the server
sends one or multiple certificates to the client. Client's
job is to verify the server certificate(s). The client checks
the received certificate(s) against a list of trusted root
certificates, have look at the Https demo application.
