I wrote a user story for this and never got the updates (must have been a Trac update) but there is a pretty good sidebar for recent comments now.
Check out ticket #782 (http://www.typosphere.org/trac/ticket/782) I've no idea who drskrud is ... but good man (er, or woman). It works with trunk as well ... well the diff does. Just in case anyone else didn't realise and had wondered.
