ISO 3166-1 codes appear in tzdb only in the zone.tab and zone1970.tab files. By far the best-known “naming convention” in tzdb is for the names given to timezones, such as “America/New_York” or “Asia/Shanghai,” which names are explicitly and intentionally NOT tied to countries, country codes, or international recognition of countries. -- Doug Ewell, CC, ALB | Lakewood, CO, US | ewellic.org
