I think the position is that -march=armv4 is compatible with more toolchains and builds code which runs on all later architectures, whilst the correct architecture setting provides minimal benefits (to U-Boot). However, I'm still working on my compiler options patch, mainly to satisfy the list comments re -msoft-float. I hope to have it available for the next merge window. Meanwhile you can get the current snapshot from www.linux-arm.org/git/u-boot-armdev.git/080212_options. I'd be interested in your comments.
