If we'd change it, then my vote wouldbe to change ethaddr into eth0addr :-) The reasoning for the name (as I see it today [which is different from the time when "ethaddr" was used for the first time]) is "MAC address for the Ethernet interface as it's being called in Linux", i. e. "ethNaddr" means "MAC address of the `ethN' network interface (in Linux)".
