Maybe discouraged and deprecated are not really optimal terms here, but what is? Fact is, that ther eare very few legitimate uses of CONFIG_ETHADDR, but then these uses *are* legitimate (but then this is strictly board-specific code, definitely not in any global files). We currently handle this through code reviews - if you use CONFIG_ETHADDR, we ask you why. In your case, it seems CONFIG_ETHADDR should not be used at all.
