Don't overdesign this. Keep it simple. If you want, you can split up the settings into several functional blocks (variable groups; this could even be mapped into the actual U-Boot env, too). Then simply concatenate the right selection of parts. See my previous message to Simon - keep the format compatible with "env import/export -t".
