Thanks, James. That's a thorough explanation. I don't know 1st-hand what a copy of Oracle costs (+ user licenses & maint.), but from what I've heard, the cost difference alone would make me lean more toward giving Unidata a shot - especially considereing most schools don't have a lot of money to play around with.
