[U2] Timed INPUT [UV]

I know there was a discussion on this subject sometime this year, but it
didn't apply to my current problem set, so I read it cursorily at best.
INPUTIF is not the solution because it waits forever once the user
starts typing. I only have the 8.3.1 BASIC manual and Adobe on the IBM
site reports the 10.0 BASIC manual broken.
