And the longer you tie them up when they do start talking, the less
valuable they'll find this annoying technology.

One of the funniest stories I heard (from a frind that's on this list)
is about receiving 2 sales calls on 2 lines around the same time.  He
connected the 2nd telemarketer to the first caller that he previously
placed on hold and then said, "ok, I'm back, go ahead".

He said the next several minutes was about the funniest conversation he
heard in a long time while the two callers both tried to sell the other
something at the same time!

Oh; and here's something I did learn, for what it's worth. The PD
"listens" 
for a human voice, If it hears a short burst ("Hello?") followed by
silence, it connects you to an available operator. If it hears a longer
burst, indicating a voice mail greeting (This is Dick Cheney. I'm not
here to take your call..."), it hangs up. So, if you answer your phone
with a sentence longer than, say, 3 seconds, you'll get hung up on.
Probably better to be on "Do Not Call", but a handy trick to know, I've
found.
