Rather than writing your own low-level socket interface, take a look at cURL. Powerful, well maintained, stable, secure, proven track record, cross-platform - and free. Plus (as though that isn't enough), it doesn't just do HTTP but FTP, DICT, LDAP, Telnet, and a host of related sub-features that simply aren't found elsewhere. I've written an MV wrapper around cURL/HTTP that I've embedded into our a couple of our products. Can't beat it. Just looking at the docs for CallHTTP gives me a headache.
