SHM_FIL_CNT is the likely culprit.
You can monitor the use of this shared memory table that maintains the
current modulo of dynamic files with '$UDTBIN/sms -d | pg'
for example:
$ $UDTBIN/sms -d | pg
Device No. I-node No. Flag Modulo Counter
1 1769475 377106 0 19936 512
2 1769475 377054 0 47 512
3 1769475 376898 0 47 512
4 1769475 131521 0 17 512
5 1769475 131544 0 17 512
6 1769475 163860 0 47 512
7 1769476 16392 0 30011 664
8 1769476 1032192 0 308827 711
9 1769476 1015808 0 1009 87
10 1769476 835584 0 1596 350
11 1769476 131075 0 101 1
12 1769475 1540190 0 32990 1
13 0 0 0 1811 0
14 0 0 0 0 0
15 0 0 0 0 0
16 0 0 0 0 0
The entries with 0 for Device No are available. If you have no available
entries when a process tries to open a dynamic file that is not already in
the table - you will get this error. You can increase SHM_FIL_CNT in
udtconfig - then stopud/startud.

No Jim, I've never seen it, but it isn't hard to work out and while you
probably do have to stop and restart UniData to get round it, rebooting
gives the impression that you might just be hitting the big button - which,
of course, is a bad thing to do...
From
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/u2/pubs/library/52unidata/adminunix.pdf
a quick search on "dynamic file" gets us to: 'Appendix A - UniData
Configuration Parameters' and the section on page 430: 'The following table
describes parameters related to dynamic files.':
==========
SHM_FIL_CNT Maximum number of dynamic files that can be open concurrently,
system-wide.
==========
Sounds to me like you need to increase this parameter in your udtconfig
file
and restart UniData.
Cheers,
Ken
