In your DICT item (for Unidata) you can specify a conversion. I've only done this on a 4 digit after the decimal to a 2 digit after the decimal, and it was either MD24 or MD42 (can't remember which). This just lets the system know the data in the dict is at MD4 but you want your output to be MD2. Don't know if it will work with MD82/MD28 but you could try.
