It's been around for quite a while. I did some basic performance testing vs. writeseq and *if* the optimal settings were used it was a little faster. I didn't think it was enough of a gain to worry about - especially since you need to do testing to get the optimal settings to get it to run faster. The syntax is a little bit more work - unless you are working with fixed length blocks of data as you need to specify the number of bytes per read/write.
