With the discussion of editors coming up again and again I thought I'd post another note about this mvToolbox software. I am not selling the software, nor do I get commission, etc.. I just think it's important for U2 developers to be aware that something this feature-rich is actually available.
This software allows you to edit code and other items in a half ED/AE mode and half in a wED mode that AccuTerm users are familiar with. In another words, you have character access (like vi, Emacs, etc), but you can also use the mouse with AccuTerm, wIntegrate, and some other emulators. This editor goes MUCH deeper than what we're all familiar with though. When you do a find/replace, you can search not only in the current item, but it will drill into Called code and Includes so that you essentially have access to editing through the application and not just within a single record/item. The editor is best used in a wide-screen format, like 132 columns by 40 lines, but can go wider - I use two monitors for development and I like to use tools that take full advantage of the real estate. The editing abilities of the product just touch the surface. There are a great many functions for "finding" things in your code, way beyond finding plain text strings. You can find which programs call to others, and where specific variables are used. You can click on Gosub and Goto statements to jump to the related labels, or find all the calls to a given label. You can do progressive searches, as in: find all programs that open this file, now find the ones that read from that file, now find the ones that don't write into that file... (At least this is my understanding of how it can be used, I hope I'm not mis-representing it.) Once you've found something you can save lists and come back to them later. Support for this sort of list processing is extensive. The software also includes support for unlimited backups of items - for versioning/auditing and "oops" recovery. I don't use the software yet but I have installed it over Unidata and D3 and have skimmed the surface of its features. It's got more features than anyone could ever use, and that might be it's only Achilles' Heal - that it's just got "too much", like when you go to a restaurant and all they have is "all you can eat" but you really just want a snack at the moment. But when you DO want features, they're in there. And if you don't know where to find the features, the software has built-in "GUI-style" Help pages and they're developing a tutorial and more Help options now. Support is a quick phone call or e-mail away, and the developers are anxious to add whatever features it doesn't have - if you can possibly find one. When I do get into this, my approach will be to take the software a little at a time, use it with smaller projects to get familiar with the features and then progress on to the more sophisticated options. The good thing is that this software has the "depth" for this sort of thing - it's not just another ED/wED/AE/vi/RED tool, and I encourage other developers to at least take a look and see what I mean. I'm not qualified to respond to questions about specific features, but if someone asks a general question I'll comment to the best of my ability. See http://mvtoolbox.com for real info.
